A signage panel is usually a composite: aluminium skins on a polyethylene core, or a PVC foam board, and it often carries a printed face. The edge is where the skins meet the core, and it is soft enough to crush and open. A channel protects the edge and keeps the printed face off whatever it is stacked against.
Composite edges are soft in the middle
The two aluminium skins on a composite panel are thin, and the core between them is soft. A knock on the edge crushes the core and the skins bow outward, which shows as a wave along the edge of a printed sign.
A channel supports the edge across its full thickness, so the skins stay parallel and the print stays flat.
Specification at a glance
Signage panels are commonly 3-10 mm. The channel needs a close fit because a printed panel that shifts in the pack will scuff its own face.
| Panel | Inner width | Leg | Note |
|---|
| Composite 3 mm | 4 mm | 25 mm | Close fit, print safe |
| Composite 6 mm | 7 mm | 30 mm | Long edges flat stacked |
| PVC foam 5 mm | 6 mm | 25-30 mm | Soft core, close fit |
| PVC foam 10 mm | 11 mm | 40 mm | Heavier, wider leg |
| Large format | As panel | 30 mm | All four edges |
Printed face, protective film and stacking
Most printed panels arrive with a protective film. The channel sits over the film and should not lift it; where the film is applied after printing, fit the channel after the film has set.
Flat stacking is normal for signage, so the channel sits on the long edges and the panels rest on the channels rather than on each other. That keeps the printed faces apart.
Small format, large format and cut shapes
Small printed panels are often bundled with channel on two edges and a corner protector on the others. Large format panels need the channel on all four edges because any edge can hit the container wall.
Cut shapes, such as letters or logos, cannot take a channel along a curve. Those are packed in a crate with separators, and the channel is used only on the rectangular stock panel.
Questions buyers ask before ordering
Will the channel scuff a printed face?
A clean dry channel does not. A loose fit lets the panel move, which is what scuffs the print.
Can it go over the protective film?
Yes, and it should stay on until the sign is installed.
Do curved or cut shapes need channels?
No. Those go in a crate with separators; the channel is for rectangular panels.
How many edges for a large panel?
All four, because any edge can contact the container wall.
Can the channel be white?
Yes, which reads better where the panel edge is visible to a customer.
