An insulation panel is mostly air held in a rigid skin. PIR, XPS and mineral wool boards all have an edge that dents or crumbles under a point load, and once the edge is deformed the panel no longer butts tight against its neighbour on site. A U channel gives that edge a hard line to sit against, without adding meaningful weight to a very light pack.
Why a soft edge needs a hard cover
The panel edge is what closes the joint on site. If it is rounded or crushed, the joint is open and the thermal performance the panel was bought for is compromised at every seam.
Paper board is a good match here because the pack is already light and cheap. A channel adds a few grams per metre and a defined edge, and it does not need a heavy wall to do that.
Specification at a glance
Insulation boards range from thin XPS to thick PIR, so the inner width varies widely. The fit should be light, because a soft board can be compressed into a tighter channel but will not spring back.
| Panel | Inner width | Leg | Wall |
|---|
| XPS 20-30 mm | as panel | 40 mm | 2.5-3 mm |
| PIR 50-60 mm | as panel | 50 mm | 3 mm |
| PIR 80-100 mm | as panel | 60 mm | 3-4 mm |
| Mineral wool 50 mm | as panel | 50 mm | 3 mm |
| Foil faced, visible | as panel | 40 mm, white | 2.5 mm |
Foil facings and the marking question
Most PIR and some XPS boards carry a foil facing, and foil marks visibly. A smooth, dry kraft facing is safe; a board with grit or a rough cut edge is not.
Where the foil is bright and visible at unpacking, a white facing reads cleaner. Neither facing changes the mechanical job, so this is a presentation decision rather than a performance one.
Bundles, pallets and the on-site cut
Panels are usually bundled and wrapped, with the channel on the two long edges. On site the bundle is cut open and the channel is discarded as the panels are fitted, so it should be cheap and easy to remove.
Where the panel is cut on site, the new edge has no protection, and that is accepted. Supplying a few extra channels in the bundle is a small cost that lets the installer protect a cut edge if the panel is moved again.
Questions buyers ask before ordering
Is the channel heavy enough to matter for freight?
It adds grams per metre. On a light insulation pack it is a negligible share of the weight.
Will paper mark a foil facing?
A clean dry kraft board does not. Grit or a rough cut edge will, so keep the bundles wrapped.
Can I get a white facing?
Yes, which reads cleaner where the foil is visible at unpacking.
What if the panel edge is already damaged?
The channel hides a small deformation but does not restore the joint. Reject damaged panels before packing.
How is the channel removed on site?
It slides off or is cut away with the bundle wrap. It is designed to be discarded, not reused.
