Cladding Panels: Thin, Wide and Easy to Bend at the Edge

PRODUCT DETAILS

A cladding panel, whether aluminium composite, HPL compact or a coated steel sheet, is thin relative to its size. That ratio is the problem: a 4 mm panel that is 1.5 m wide bends easily, and the edge is where a bend becomes a permanent kink. A narrow U channel stiffens the edge and protects both faces at once.

A thin panel needs an edge, not a cushion

Foam and bubble wrap protect a face from impact but do nothing for the edge, which is where a thin panel fails. A channel that grips the edge gives it a local stiffener along the length.

That also helps stacking. Panels stacked flat with channels on the long edges sit on the channels rather than on each other, so the stack is more stable and the faces are less likely to rub.

Specification at a glance

Cladding is usually 3-6 mm, so the channel is narrow with a short leg. The fit matters more than the wall, because a loose channel on a thin panel will not stay on.

Facade panels, soffits and fabricated pieces

Long facade panels are usually shipped on edge in a stillage or an A-frame, and the channel runs the full length on the two long edges. Fabricated pieces with folded returns need a channel that clears the fold, or corner protection instead.

Where panels are cut on site from a larger sheet, the cut edge is the one that needs protection, and it is often left bare. Supplying channel with the sheet lets the installer protect the cut edge properly.

Coating, film and abrasion

Most cladding arrives with a protective film on the face. The channel should sit on the film without lifting it, and the film should not be removed before packing.

Keep the channel free of swarf. A metal fabricator with cut offcuts nearby will get aluminium chips onto paper, and those chips are what mark a coated face in transit.

Questions buyers ask before ordering

Will the channel bend with a thin panel?
It follows the panel and stiffens the edge locally. It does not make the panel rigid across its width.

Can the channel sit over the protective film?
Yes, and it should. Remove the film only after unpacking at the site.

What about panels with folded returns?
A channel that clears the fold, or paper corner protection, rather than forcing a channel over the return.

Do you cut to the panel length?
Yes, to the millimetre, up to 6,000 mm.

Is the board safe on a coated face?
A clean dry kraft board is. Metal swarf trapped between board and panel is the usual cause of a mark.
