Appliance Panels: Protecting a Painted Steel Face at the Edge

PRODUCT DETAILS

A painted appliance panel, whether a door, a side or a top, is a thin steel skin over a soft core. It dents at the edge first, because the edge is where the skin has no support behind it. A U channel covers the edge and both faces for a short distance, which is the zone that takes the contact when panels are stacked or leaned.

The edge has no backing

Away from the edge the panel is supported by foam or by the cabinet behind it. At the edge the steel is unsupported for a few millimetres, so a knock folds it and the paint cracks at the fold.

A channel puts a layer in front of that unsupported strip, so the impact is shared along the edge instead of folding it at one point.

Specification at a glance

Appliance panels are usually 0.6-1.0 mm steel over a core, so the channel is narrow and the leg is short. The critical property is a smooth facing that will not mark the paint.

Stacked panels and leaning packs

Panels are stacked flat with separators, or leaned in a rack. Flat stacking is kinder, and the channel protects the edges while the separators protect the faces.

Leaning packs put the weight on the bottom edge. That edge needs a heavier wall or a doubled channel, and the rack contact points need their own protection so the frame does not print through.

Paint, print and unpacking at the line

White goods are unpacked at the end of the line with the panel already fitted, so the channel has to come off cleanly and leave nothing behind. No adhesive, no staples.

Where the panel carries a printed model code on the edge, print the channel instead. It keeps the code readable through the pack without printing on a painted surface.

Questions buyers ask before ordering

Will the channel mark the paint?
A clean dry kraft facing does not. Grit between channel and paint will, so keep bundles wrapped.

Is it strong enough to stop a dent?
It spreads the contact along the edge. A direct impact on a flat face still needs a face panel.

Why a short leg here?
A long leg on a thin panel bridges and creases, and the crease prints through to the paint.

Can it be printed with the model code?
Yes, which keeps the code readable without printing on the painted surface.

Does it leave residue at unpacking?
No adhesive is used, so it comes away clean.
