The leg is the part of the U that lies against the face of the panel. It runs from 35 mm to 70 mm on this product, and it is the dimension that decides how much face is protected and how well the piece stays on. Equal legs are the default; unequal legs are common where one face matters more than the other.
What the leg length controls
A longer leg covers more face and spreads a band further, so the strap load is lower per square centimetre. A shorter leg follows a curve better, sits flatter on a thin panel and folds more easily at the notch.
The leg is also what holds the protector on. Too short and the piece tips off when the panel is turned; the grip comes from the length of the two legs against the two faces, not from the fold.
Specification at a glance
The table pairs the panel with a leg that is long enough to hold and short enough not to bridge.
| Panel | Leg | Note |
|---|
| 3-6 mm sheet | 35 mm | Short leg follows |
| 12 mm board | 40 mm | Standard |
| 18 mm board | 50 mm | Standard |
| 25-30 mm | 50-60 mm | Wider face |
| Finished face one side | 60/35 mm | Unequal pair |
| Curved edge | 35-40 mm | Short leg only |
Unequal legs, and when they help
Where one face is finished and the other is hidden, a 60/35 pair puts the protection on the visible face and just enough on the back to hold the piece.
Unequal legs also help on a panel with a rebate or a lipped edge, where a long leg on that side would stand off the surface. Cutting the leg back is cheaper than changing the section.
Leg, fold and the notch
A long leg needs a wider notch to fold through the same angle, because more material has to close. That is why a 70 mm leg at 90 degrees is usually pre-bent rather than hand folded.
Where the pack has many corners and a long leg is not needed for protection, dropping to 40 mm makes the folding easier and the bundle smaller.
Questions buyers ask before ordering
What leg range do you make?
35 to 70 mm, equal or unequal.
Do legs have to be equal?
No. Unequal legs suit a panel with one visible face or a rebated edge.
What holds the protector on?
The two legs gripping the two faces, not the fold.
Does a longer leg fold as easily?
No. A long leg needs a wider notch and is usually pre-bent.
Can leg and wall be chosen independently?
Yes, within the ranges: leg 35-70 mm, wall 2.5-5 mm.
