A paper roll is a heavy cylinder with two vulnerable ends. The wrap protects the curved surface, but the roll end is open, and that is where a clamp truck, a chock or a stack neighbour does damage. Edge protection for rolls is a ring or a curved corner board, and the specification is driven by handling method rather than by weight alone.
Profile data for roll ends
| Handling | Protection | Position |
|---|
| Vertical stack | Ring protector, 4 mm | Between every roll |
| Clamp truck | Ring or curved board, 5 mm | Both ends |
| Horizontal cradle | L board at contact lines | Two lines, not the ends |
| Export with header | Ring plus top cap | Top roll protected |
| Printing roll | White ring, 4 mm | Clean end for inspection |
Roll end damage and where it comes from
Clamp trucks are the main cause. The clamp pads press the curved surface, which is fine, but the roll can shift in the clamp and the end face takes the contact. A damaged roll end means the outer wraps cannot be spliced cleanly, and the customer rejects the roll.
Stacking is the second cause. Rolls stacked vertically bear on the end face of the roll below, and the bottom roll in a stack of four carries the whole load on its end. A protective board between rolls spreads that load.
Ring versus corner board
A ring protector wraps the circular end, protecting the whole circumference in one piece. It is the right part for vertical stacking and for rolls that are stored on their ends. A curved corner board covers a segment and is used where handling only touches one part of the end.
For horizontal rolls on a cradle, the protection goes on the two contact lines where the roll meets the cradle, not on the end face. Protecting the end of a horizontal roll that never touches anything is wasted material.
Print, moisture and the printing house
Printing houses reject rolls with damaged ends because the web cannot be spliced without introducing a defect. They also reject rolls that have absorbed moisture at the end. A board does not seal the roll, but it keeps the end from direct contact with a damp floor.
Where the roll is printed or branded, a white board keeps the end clean for inspection.
Questions buyers ask before ordering
Do you make ring shaped protectors?
Yes, ring and circular corner profiles are a separate product line in the same kraft board.
What wall for a 1 tonne roll?
4-5 mm. The ring carries compression, so wall matters more than leg width.
Can the ring be printed?
Yes, one or two colours, usually the mill name and the roll number.
Is it recyclable with the roll wrap?
Yes, it repulps with the paper, which is one reason mills accept it.
What is the lead time?
7-15 working days, with samples in 3-5 days for stock grades.
