Pallet edge protectors are the kraft L profiles that stand on the four vertical corners and the top rim of a stacked load, so stretch film, banding and fork contact press on paper instead of collapsing the carton corner. Legs run 25-100 mm, walls 2.5-8 mm, and every length is cut to the load height rather than to a stock size.
Specification at a glance
| Load and wrapping | Profile we quote | Reason |
|---|
| Uniform cartons, film only | 50 x 50 mm, 3-4 mm wall | Corner support is enough, film carries the face |
| Mixed carton heights | 60 x 60 mm, 5 mm wall | Longer leg bridges the height step without creasing |
| Dense load, banded | 70 x 70 mm, 6 mm wall | Band tension is concentrated, needs more wall |
| Printed retail carton | 50 x 50 mm, 3 mm, white top | White facing keeps the print readable |
| Reused pallets, rough deck | 60 x 60 mm, 5 mm, doubled at base | Bottom 200 mm takes the deck impact |
Where a stacked pallet load actually loses its shape
It is rarely the middle of the carton that fails. The vertical corner seam is the first part to give, because that is where the board is folded twice and where film tension concentrates when the load is wrapped under tension. Once one corner rounds off, the film goes slack over the whole face and the stack starts to lean in transit.
Adding a paper L profile does not stiffen the carton. It spreads the film and band load over a wider strip of board and keeps the corner geometry square long enough for the wrap to hold. That is the whole job, and it is why profile size has to follow load weight and film tension, not shelf stock.
Corner, rim or double board: matching profile to load
A corner board that is too light deforms under film tension and does nothing. One that is too heavy adds cost and thickness without changing the outcome. The table below is the working rule we quote against; adjust it when the load is dense or the film is applied at high tension.
Fitting sequence on the pallet line
Place the four verticals before the load is wrapped, with the long leg on the face that carries the print or the label and the short leg turning onto the side. Push each board down until it sits on the pallet deck, not on the bottom carton, otherwise the first carton takes the whole board weight under compression.
Top rim boards go on after the last layer, laid horizontally over the film, and are then caught by the final two wrap turns. If banding is used instead of film, fit the board under the band and add a second short piece at the seal so the seal does not sit directly on the carton edge.
Questions buyers ask before ordering
Do pallet edge protectors replace corner boards made of plastic?
They replace them where the load is not exposed to rain or repeated handling. Plastic survives water and reuse; paper wins on cost, repulpability and print. Most export loads only need one trip.
What wall thickness for a 1,000 kg pallet?
4-5 mm with 60 mm legs is the usual starting point when the load is film wrapped. Move to 6 mm when the load is banded or stacked two high in the container.
Can the boards be printed with our logo?
Yes, one or two colours water-based flexo, with text at 6 mm or larger. Print runs are quoted separately from the plain profile because they need a plate.
How are they packed for shipment?
Bundled in 50 or 100 pieces, strapped, and stacked on a pallet. Bundles can be labelled with your item code so the packing line does not have to sort them.
What is the minimum order?
3,000 meters per size. Mixed sizes count together toward the total, and a mixed container can hold several lengths.
