An L-shaped paper edge protector is a length of laminated kraft board folded to 90 degrees, with two legs that sit against the two faces of a corner. It is also sold as angle board, edge board or corner board. It has no plastic core and no adhesive: it holds its shape because the fold is pressed into the board during production and because the load presses it against the corner.
Standard L profile data
| Variable | Range | What it controls |
|---|
| Leg width | 25-100 mm | Pressure spread on the face |
| Wall thickness | 2.5-8 mm | Cut resistance and compression |
| Length | 300-6,000 mm | Coverage of the edge |
| Angle | 60, 90, 120 degrees | Fit to the corner shape |
| Surface | kraft, white, coated | Marking and moisture |
| Print | 1-2 colours | Brand and item code |
How it is made
Sheets of kraft paper are glued in layers with starch adhesive, pressed and dried to build the wall thickness. The laminated sheet is then folded and pressed along the centre line to form the leg angle, and cut to length. The fold is the part that decides whether the profile sits flat on a corner or rides up on it.
A well made fold has a small internal radius. A fold that is too tight cracks the outer layer at the crease, and a cracked crease is where the profile fails first under band load.
What the two legs do
One leg takes the band, the film or the impact; the other leg keeps the profile from rotating. That is the whole mechanical idea. If both legs are the same length, the profile is general purpose. If one leg is longer, the long leg goes on the face that carries the load, which is why unequal legs are quoted for panel and frame work.
Leg width also sets how far the pressure spreads. Going from a 40 mm to a 60 mm leg spreads the same band tension over 50 percent more area, which is usually a better upgrade than adding wall thickness when the problem is a surface mark rather than a cut.
Wall thickness, length and the buying variables
Wall runs from 2.5 mm to 8 mm. Thickness resists cutting and carries compression; leg width spreads pressure. Buyers who specify only thickness usually end up with a board that does not cut but still dents.
Length is free within 300-6,000 mm and cut to the millimetre. For export packing the length is usually the load height; for carton work it is 300-500 mm; for panel work it is the panel length. The opened width of a folded profile is capped at 260 mm across three faces, so wider sections need two profiles rather than one.
Questions buyers ask before ordering
What is the difference between angle board and edge protector?
The same product under different trade names. Angle board is common in North America, edge protector in the UK and Europe.
Is it strong enough to replace timber?
For band and film protection, usually yes. For structural blocking, no, and a supplier who says otherwise is overstating the product.
Can it be folded at 60 or 120 degrees?
Yes, 60 and 120 degrees are standard folds alongside 90 degrees.
What is the maximum opened width?
260 mm across three faces. Above that the profile needs a different construction.
How is it packed?
Bundled in 50 or 100 pieces, strapped, labelled by length, and palletised for container loading.
