Honeycomb Board for Furniture: Liner, Panel and Core

PRODUCT DETAILS

Furniture uses honeycomb board in two completely different ways, and buyers often confuse them. As packaging, a board lines the inside of the carton and protects a finished surface. As a component, the board becomes part of the furniture, in a door, a tabletop or a shelf. The specification is different for each, so the first question is which one you are buying.

Packaging a finished piece

A lacquered or veneered panel is damaged by pressure, not by impact. The damage is a mark where a corner, a fitting or another panel pressed against the surface. A honeycomb liner spreads that contact over a wide area and holds the piece away from the carton wall.

For flat-pack furniture the carton itself is the protection, and the honeycomb board is used as an edge and corner liner inside it. For upholstered pieces the board goes against the frame, not the fabric, because paper against fabric in a hot container can leave a mark.

Specification at a glance

As packaging the board is 15-25 mm with a soft-ish cell; as a component it is 25-30 mm with a dense cell and a facing that accepts the final finish.

Using it as a furniture component

A honeycomb core door or tabletop is a sandwich: a paper core between facings, with the facings doing the bending work and the core keeping them apart. That is efficient in stiffness per kilo, which is why it is used for interior doors, cabinet doors, tabletops and shelving.

It is not a substitute for solid timber where the edge will be machined, joined or load bearing in a small area. A honeycomb panel needs an edge frame or a solid insert at hinges, locks and any point fixing, and that detail decides whether the component works.

Edge treatment and moisture

The cut edge is the weak point of any honeycomb component: it exposes the core and it is where water gets in. Edge banding, a paper U profile or a timber frame all close it, and the choice depends on whether the edge is visible.

For export furniture in a humid container, a moisture-resistant facing is worth discussing. A board that takes on water at an open edge loses stiffness quickly, and the damage shows as a soft corner after unpacking.

Questions buyers ask before ordering

Is this board for packing furniture or for making it?
Both, and they are different products. Tell us which use and the specification follows.

Can a honeycomb panel be used for a cabinet door?
Yes, with an edge frame and solid inserts at the hinges. A bare cut edge will not hold a hinge.

Will the board mark a lacquered surface?
A dry kraft facing is normally safe. White facing is used where the surface is pale and the container gets hot.

How do I close the cut edge?
Edge banding, a paper U profile or a timber frame, depending on whether the edge is visible and whether it takes a fixing.

Do you supply cut-to-size panels?
Yes, cut to size or die-cut, up to the standard production width of about 1,250 mm.
