Furniture Shipping Corner Protectors: Where Claims Come From

PRODUCT DETAILS

Furniture claims are rarely about the whole piece. They are about one corner that took the first impact, or a band that pressed a line into a lacquered face. Corner protectors made of paper solve both without adding the weight of foam blocks or the waste stream of plastic, and they can be faced in white so nothing transfers onto a light finish.

The three damage patterns that get claimed

Corner crush on a flat-pack carton looks minor in the warehouse and serious in a customer living room, because the carton corner is directly over the panel corner. Once the carton corner is rounded, the panel edge underneath has already taken the load.

Banding lines on upholstery and lacquer come from the strap itself, not from handling. A strap tightened over a fabric face leaves a permanent crease within hours in warm weather. A paper board under the strap converts the line into a band of pressure spread over 40-50 mm.

Surface scuffing comes from the pack rubbing against itself. Corner boards keep a gap between stacked pieces so the faces do not touch during the journey.

Why white facing matters on furniture

Natural kraft against a white or pale lacquer, in a container that reaches 60 degrees, can transfer colour. White top board removes that risk at a small cost premium and also looks correct when the retailer opens the carton in front of the customer.

For dark finishes the opposite applies: a white board can leave a light dust mark if the surface is oily. On dark lacquer we quote natural kraft with a smooth calendar finish.

Specifying by piece, not by pallet

A flat-pack carton needs four short corner pieces, 300-400 mm, 3 mm wall, because the panel corners are what hit the floor. An upholstered piece needs a full-height corner board plus a top cap, because the frame corner is soft and deforms under its own weight when stacked.

Where a retailer imposes a carton specification, ask for it in writing before ordering. Retailer packaging manuals often name a minimum board grade, and a board below that grade will be rejected at the receiving dock regardless of how well it performs.

Questions buyers ask before ordering

Will white board mark a white lacquer finish?
No, provided both are dry. White top is the grade we quote for pale finishes precisely because kraft can transfer colour in heat.

Do you supply foam corner blocks as well?
No. We supply paper only. Where a piece needs cushioning rather than edge support, foam is still the correct material and we would rather say so.

What length for a 2 m wardrobe carton?
Full height, so 1,980-2,000 mm, or two pieces per corner with a 100 mm overlap if freight length is a constraint.

Can the boards be printed with our brand?
Yes, one or two colours. Retail buyers often print the carton code so the packer cannot mix sizes.

How are they packed for our line?
Bundled by length in 50 or 100 pieces, strapped, labelled by item code, so the packing bench takes one bundle at a time.
