Custom U-shaped paper edge protector is a three-sided kraft channel built to a drawing rather than picked from a size list. The buyer sends the panel thickness, the face height they want covered and the cut length, and the profile is made to those numbers: bottom width 15-150 mm, side height 25-75 mm, wall thickness 2.5-5 mm, length cut to the millimetre. This page covers the part that decides whether a custom order goes right - how to specify it.

What Can Be Customized on a U-Shaped Profile?
Six dimensions and two finishes. Everything else - paper grade, glue, ply count - follows from those choices, so a single line of data is enough to quote:
- Bottom width: the inside span across the third face, 15-150 mm. This is set by panel thickness plus 2-5 mm of clearance.
- Side height: how far each leg runs down the panel face, 25-75 mm. 40 mm covers a standard board edge, 60-75 mm is used where the strap sits close to the corner.
- Wall thickness: 2.5-5 mm, in laminated plies. Thin walls for unstrapped cartons, thick walls where banding is tensioned.
- Length: cut to the millimetre, from 300 mm up. Length should match the load height plus 20-50 mm.
- Symmetry: legs can be unequal, for example 40 mm on one face and 60 mm on the other.
- Colour and print: natural kraft, white top, black, or one to two colour print with your logo and size marking.

How to Send a Size That Can Be Produced
Most custom orders that go wrong do so before production, in the number that was sent. A workable request has four lines:
- Panel thickness, measured at the edge, not in the middle. A 17.8 mm board and an 18 mm board need different inside widths once clearance is added.
- Covered face height, or how much of the panel face the leg should protect. If the strap sits 15 mm from the edge, a 25 mm leg is enough; if the load rubs against a container wall, go to 50-60 mm.
- Cut length, per piece or per bundle. Length accepts a tolerance of 1 mm on our side, so state whether the board must sit flush under a carton top.
- Strap type and quantity. PP strapping suits 2.5-3.5 mm walls, PET 3.5-4.5 mm, steel banding 4.5-5 mm. Quantity tells us the cutting setup and the price per metre.
Worked example. An 18 mm MDF panel, 800 mm tall, banded with PET strap 20 mm in from the edge, 6,000 pieces. Specification: bottom width 22 mm, side height 45 mm, wall 4 mm, length 820 mm, natural kraft, plain. That is a complete order - it quotes without a second email.

Tolerances and the 260 mm Opened Width Limit
There is one physical limit worth knowing before you draw a wide profile. When the bottom width reaches 150 mm, each side can only be 50 mm, and the total opened width - the three faces laid flat - cannot exceed 260 mm. A channel drawn wider than that will not form cleanly at the fold, and the plies separate at the corners over time.
Inside the limit, the working tolerances are straightforward: 1 mm on length, 1 mm on leg width, and about 0.3 mm on wall thickness between plies. Moisture content is held below 10 percent so the profile does not soften in a humid container.
Sample, MOQ and Lead Time
A new profile gets a physical sample before the run. Cut-to-size samples leave in 3-5 working days; the buyer pays the express freight, the sample itself is free on stock paper grades. Production then runs 7-15 working days after sample and artwork approval, and the order ships within 7 days of deposit once the run is complete.
MOQ is 3,000 meters for a custom size. Because the profile is cut from laminated roll stock rather than moulded, small runs on a standard paper grade are normal, and the MOQ is measured in meters rather than pieces - 3,000 meters of a 820 mm length is roughly 3,650 pieces.
Printing on a Custom Profile
Print goes on after the board is formed, in one or two colours, water-based flexo. Two things to decide: the base - natural kraft prints warm and slightly muted, white top prints crisp - and the artwork, which should be vector with text no smaller than 6 mm high to stay legible on a curved kraft surface. We send a printed proof and a physical sample before the plate is approved.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the minimum order for a custom U-shaped paper edge protector?
A: 3,000 meters. That suits a first order on a standard paper grade; printed profiles carry a higher minimum because of the plate.
Q: Can the two legs be different heights?
A: Yes. Unequal legs are common where one face is visible and the other sits against a pallet or a carton wall. State both heights.
Q: Can you match an existing plastic U profile?
A: Yes, given the inside width, the leg height and the wall thickness. Paper will not match the impact resistance of plastic at the same wall thickness, so the wall usually goes up one step.
Q: How tight is the fit on an 18 mm panel?
A: A 20-22 mm inside width gives a push fit. A 19 mm channel grips but is slow to fit by hand on a packing line.
Q: Is the profile recyclable?
A: The standard build is paper and starch adhesive only, so it repulps with the cartons it protects.
Q: Can I print my logo and the size on the same profile?
A: Yes, one or two colours, logo plus size marking or handling icons, printed on the flat of the leg.
Q: What is the lead time for a new size?
A: Samples 3-5 working days, production 7-15 working days after approval.
Q: Do you ship to the US and EU?
A: Yes, EXW, FOB or CIF, palletized or in export cartons. Send the destination port for a landed comparison.
