Wall Thickness: What 2.5 mm Buys and What 5 mm Costs

PRODUCT DETAILS

Thickness on this product means the wall, the laminated board build that forms each face. It ranges from 2.5 mm to 5 mm and it drives three things at once: how the piece survives a band, how it folds at the notch, and what it costs per meter. Going up a step is not automatically better, because a heavier wall folds less cleanly.

The three jobs the wall does

Under a strap the wall spreads the load so the strap does not print through to the panel. Under a stack it resists crushing at the edge. At the notch it has to fold without delaminating.

Those pull in different directions. A 5 mm wall spreads a band far better than a 2.5 mm one, and folds less easily at the same notch, which is why heavy walls are usually pre-bent at the factory rather than folded on the line.

Specification at a glance

The table pairs the duty with the wall, assuming a normal leg for the panel thickness.

Choosing by how the pack is handled

Hand-carried panels and cartons: 2.5-3 mm is enough, and the lighter wall folds by hand without effort.

Banded stacks and palletised board: 3-4 mm, where the wall has to survive a strap and the edge has to stay square under load.

Reused crates, steel banding and repeated handling: 4-5 mm, and expect to order it pre-bent.

Thickness and the numbers that are not thickness

Wall thickness is often confused with the two other dimensions in the order. Inner width is the gap, leg is the face, wall is the board. A 3 mm wall on a 19 mm inner width is a different order from a 19 mm wall, which does not exist.

Ceiling for the wall is 5 mm on this product. Above that the fold at the notch opens rather than closing, and the piece has to be made as a moulded or glued corner instead.

Questions buyers ask before ordering

What thickness range do you make?
2.5 to 5 mm wall. Above that the notch does not close cleanly.

Is thicker always better?
No. A heavy wall folds less easily at the notch and costs more per meter.

What wall for a banded stack?
3-4 mm, which spreads the strap without making the fold difficult.

Does thickness affect the inside width?
Not the nominal figure, but a heavy wall uses clearance at the fold.

Can I mix walls in one order?
Yes, as separate sizes, each with its own minimum quantity.
